The Tell Tale Heart

The short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” is by Edgar Allen Poe. It is a very morbid story, but Poe always leaves behind an important lesson for all of his readers. In this story the message is that guilt can ruin us and destroy people. It is better to be honest and set your guilt free. As a future educator it is part of my job to constantly keep the children engaged. I know that this can be a difficult thing for teachers to deal with and that is where the mutiple intelligences come in. Every student learns in a different way and can comprehend things much differently from the rest of their classmates. Two intelligences that I find very intriguing are Intrapersonal and Interpersonal. A child who has intrapersonal intelligence is one who is aware of their own emotions and feelings. They can not see how others are feeling around them because they are too busy going through the “hell” that they have created for themsleves or the “hell” they now have to face. In the story, the narrator tells the story of how he killed an elderly man. He had to confess because the guilt was eating him up alive and has conscience got the best of him. If he was not feeling emotions or any form of guilt he would not have confessed to the poilce. Intepersonal is very different though because this is the ability to be aware of other people’s emotions and can detect when someome is going through soemthing rough. You are not only worried about your emotions because you can recognize that there are other people around you going through something rough. When I am a teacher I have to work with all my students who will all have different intelligence levels. I hope that all of my children will have some form of intrapersonal intelligence. Children are able to help others when one is down and realize that they are going through something. For example, when I volunteered at an elemenatry school this little girl was sad in the corner one day. Another little girl went up to her and asked her what was wrong and if she wanted to join her and a group of friends in playing their game. If you do not any of these intelligences then you are considered a psychopath in this day and age. This means that you are not able to express emotions and understand people’s emotions around you. You must be able to exhibit emotions to be considered a human being.

There is another type of intelligence called Naturalist intelligence. This is a type of intelligence where people are aware of their surrondings and are very sensitive towards nature and the world. Going off of interpersonal how do humans value their relationship with other animals. Some humans can see when something is not right with their pet and when they are not feeling well. The role of humans and animals have changed very recently over the last few years. Some people value animal relationships over human relationships. Following the idea of guilt, whener something happens to a pet we always feel guilty as the owners. As pet owners we have a obligation to be there to take care and support our pet. Yes, keeping in mind that they are the animal, but so are we. We have diffeent thinking anf thought processes though and are put uop to a set of different standards. Whenever they get very sick or pass away the guilt will definitely eat us alive and we will always wonder if there was something different that we could have done to prevent it. Having interpersonal intelligence will help to have emotions or have such an extreme love for animals as many pet owners commonly do. This is a perfect thing to talk about especially for children. Children love to talk about animals or visit them in the zoo. I know I had a love for animals when I was younger and I still do. I have a soft spot for animals and always will. I would do anything for my dog. This can be very helpful in your lesson plans because you will need to teach biology concepts and it will be very helpful if it is something they already have knowledge or interest in. They will not be bored in the classroom. I plan on creating lessons plans teaching them about the story but also using real world examples and pictures to undesrtand the different intelligences. What I mean by this is that I will play a video that relates to the story to get the ball rolling. Then I will ask them questions to further their understanding of the reading. This will be very effective because I feel that children learn better when they see something that they love like a cartoon show that they can relate to.

Since working on the final project I have encountered problems with the intelligences. Sometimes I find it hard to relate to certain intelligences. For Example, when completing this assignment, naturalist intelligence does not apply as much to this story. Going back to my project I will work harder to find connections or use the intelligneces that relate more closely to the reading. “The Tell-Tale Heart relates to my last blog post. I wrote about “The Scarlet Letter” in my last post and both stories will help the children realize that their decisons do make an impact. People make decisons everyday that will affect others as well. There are consequences for your actions and this can help students to choose more wisely about their decisions. They can make informed decisons based on what is deemed right/wrong in society versus the individual deeming right right or wrong for themselves.

  1. I really like your blog post! It is similar to our idea in that we are exploring Poe as well so it would be cool to cross reference!
