Final Lesson Plan on The Roaring Twenties

Welcome back to our final lesson plan on the Roaring Twenties! Throughout this semester, Erin and I have focused on learning all about the Roaring Twenties and the ways in which we could teach this significant decade from American history to a fifth-grade class. While we initially looked into teaching “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it being one of the great classics from this time, we felt that it was too advanced of a reading for this age group. Therefore we decided to take another approach to the 1920s, using the literature “What Were the Roaring Twenties?” by … Continue reading Final Lesson Plan on The Roaring Twenties

final blog post

Hi everyone and welcome to my final blog post! Throughout the entire process of this project I have learned a lot about what it takes to design a lesson plan as a teacher and the hard work that goes into doing so. I feel as if my partner and I have been very successful in creating a lesson around the Roaring Twenties that is going to be age appropriate for a fifth-grade class and will excite the students. At first it was quite challenging to take somewhat of advanced material and translate it into being taught to a younger audience, … Continue reading final blog post

Final Project!

Hi everyone! As we end this semester, my partner Kaitlynn Castro and I have finished our project on The Great Gatsby. Here, we are talking about how Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences connect with the story as well as the movie. We have provided some clip examples that can also be found in the book. The reason for this, is because we thought it would make a lot more sense to students if they had access to how the characters were feeling and what they were doing in the moment. It is true that books can express emotion more than movies can. … Continue reading Final Project!

Final Blog Post.

Hello, and welcome back to my blog post! In my last blog post I talked about the teaching fifth and sixth graders about the Roaring 20s using the book, What Were the Roaring Twenties? by Michele Mortlock. The lesson plan my partner and I came up with was a powerpoint presentation to introduce what the Roaring 20s were, the assigned book, and finally to wrap this lesson together, a poster project included with a timeline. We will gear our teaching tool toward Gardner’s visual-spatial intelligence. This intelligence is great for learners that like to look at the pictures and watch … Continue reading Final Blog Post.

The Personal Reflection of the Gatsby Project

Maria and I have worked together and have come up with amazing ideas that we are going to use in our future elementary school classrooms. One of the successes of our project was coming up with the in-class activity of making literature circles which is when the students are assigned into groups and each of them will go through the book, assignments, and activities together. Also, we included some super fun activities for the students so that they can have a better understanding of the novel such as a Gallery Walk, where we would play some 1920s music and display … Continue reading The Personal Reflection of the Gatsby Project

Third Blog Post

Welcome to my third blog post! In our second blog post, Kaitlynn and I explained how we will be discussing F. Scott Fitzgeralds, The Great Gatsby. We are aiming to gear our lesson plan towards middle and high school students. We chose this age group because there is so much important history that was occuring at the time period of which The Great Gatsby takes place in. The roaring twenties was such an important time in American history and one that I have learned about in depth, throughout my years of schooling. The Great Gatsby is a book gearned towards … Continue reading Third Blog Post

The Great Gatsby

As this century’s version of the Roaring 20s is vastly approaching, here is a recap on what our last blog post addressed! In our last blog post, we introduced the idea of teaching The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald to students at a middle and high school level. We chose the book because we thought it was a great representation of what the Roaring 20s looked like one hundred years ago. Although it does not address all the events that occurred during this time period, it does get a little more personal. Essentially, we chose this book because students … Continue reading The Great Gatsby

My 3rd blog post!

Hi everyone and welcome back to my final blog post! As discussed in my prior post, my partner Erin and I will be gearing our lesson plan towards a 5thgrade class and the topic that we will be focusing on is the Roaring 20’s. We are still planning on using the text, What Were the Roaring Twenties? by Michele Mortlock as our literature component within the lesson plan, feeling that it thoroughly sums up all the information we hope our students to learn throughout this unit. Since this lesson will be taught to an upper elementary level grade, we feel that it … Continue reading My 3rd blog post!

3rd Blog Post.

Hi and welcome back to my third blog post! In my last blog posts I have talked about teaching the Roaring 20s to fifth and sixth graders. The book that my partner and I will be assigning for students to be introduced to the Roaring 20s will be What Were the Roaring Twenties? by Michele Mortlock. This book is great because it has everything that went on during that decade along with real life photos so the students can get a full understanding of life during this time. The way my partner and I will be introducing the whole topic … Continue reading 3rd Blog Post.

The Road From the Roaring 20’s to the Great Depression: Through the Eyes of Elementary Students

Hi everyone and welcome back to my teaching blog! As discussed in my last post, I am going to be gearing my lesson towards teaching students about the road from the Roaring 20’s all the way to the Great Depression. While in my last post I heavily discussed the lessons and background that I have on this time era, that being my experience with the classic piece of literature, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I now want to transition into solely focusing on how I will communicate my knowledge on this subject to elementary level students. With that being … Continue reading The Road From the Roaring 20’s to the Great Depression: Through the Eyes of Elementary Students

2nd Blog Post; The Roaring 20’s.

After talking about The Great Gatsby in my last blog post and researching about The Roaring 20’s, I will be using the book “What Were The Roaring Twenties? (What Was) by Michele Mortlock. Even though I have not read this book yet, it looks like a great book for 5th and 6th graders because it has many pictures of what the 1920s had in that lifestyle but also is a chapter book. A chapter book is a great way for 5th and 6th graders to work on their reading skills. The grades I will be focusing on while teaching the … Continue reading 2nd Blog Post; The Roaring 20’s.

Great Gatsby Lesson Plan

Hello, my name is Maria Bonaddio and welcome back to my teaching blog! If I were to teach 5th graders, I would like to teach them about the Jazz Age. The Jazz Age was a cultural period and movement that took place in the 1920s within America. This era is when both new styles of music and dance emerged. I would love to teach students about the culture of this era including the history of flappers, musicians, filmmakers, athletes, entertainers and more. During this time, the people of America went through many social and political changes. For the first time, … Continue reading Great Gatsby Lesson Plan

The Great Gatsby

By Kaitlynn Castro and Marykate Gorham As we wrap up the final year of the decade, we are soon entering this generations’ version of the Roaring 20’s. In honor of this, we have decided to focus our final research project on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The students we are aiming to teach this book to are middle and high school students. We intend on using interpersonal, intrapersonal and linguistics for Gardner’s components of intelligence. All three of these intelligences were used throughout the book, and we plan on explaining when these intelligences are present in the book. … Continue reading The Great Gatsby

Modernism and Realism in The Great Gatsby

The Modern Period had begun in the 1900s and was a movement in which technology and urbanization increased due to the Industrial Revolution. A favorite text of mine that is included with this time period is The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald. Modernism was portrayed through the corruption of the American dream and disobeying society’s rules. Throughout the book, there are decisions made by each of the characters that cause poor consequences they are left to deal with. I enjoy reading about this time period because it is most relatable and realistic, by showing the struggles individuals had to … Continue reading Modernism and Realism in The Great Gatsby

What I would like to teach.

American Literature is the best way to learn about different time periods to younger generations. I have an interest in teaching children because I want to be that teacher that the children look up to like when I looked up to my teachers. Teaching also interests me because I want to teach the kids so they can have the confidence of learning so they can be anything they want to be when they get older. Authors that interest me include, Harper Lee and F. Scott Fitzgerald, I’m interested in these two authors because during my high school english classes, these … Continue reading What I would like to teach.

Modern Period

Two of the literary time periods I am most interested in are the modern period and the postmodern period. Some of my favorite books were written during these time periods, such as the Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird. I love these specific literary time periods because the history going on in the United States at the time really intrigues me. For example, I love learning about the roaring twenties and this is why I would love to teach about the Great Gatsby and the roaring twenties. The Great Gatsby talks about the Americans Dream and how different people … Continue reading Modern Period
