Hi, my name is Michelle Lin and welcome to my second blog post! For my lesson plan, I would be using Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Self Reliance. Emerson is I would focus on 5th -6th-grade students who’re about to enter middle school. This type of literature is great because it focuses on Realism. It also defines individualism, which most fifth to sixth graders will start to experience as they soon transition into middle school. I am interested in looking at realist literature. Realism was a literary and artistic movement that followed Romanticism. Realism is characterized by the choice of the everyday, the use of very typical and authentic settings, believable characters, and very relatable plot lines. Issues of class, money, gender, and geographic location often appear in these works. When reading works from this literary period, readers ca often sympathize with the characters as they are having problems that many people can relate to.
