Final Project – The Civil Rights Movement

In our lesson, Ally and I created a teaching tool using a book, timeline, and photo journal. We will in begin with reading the book, The Bus Ride That Changed History written by Pamela Duncan. Starting off the lesson reading this book will give students a chance to be slowly brought into the difficult topics that are going to be brought up. After reading the book, we will have a discussion on what they thought of it, and if they had anything that stood out to them. Next after having the discussion, we are going to show a photo journal of photos from that time giving another way they can start coming full circle with the basics of what they need to know from this era. We have included a caption next to the photos so we have a moment to explain what is happening if they can’t understand by viewing it. Seeing these photos will trigger emotion and force a moment of reflection. We then have a timeline of these events so they can picture the time frames of when all these important events occurred, Even have them create their own timeline as an activity. To conclude, we will leave them with an exit ticket on what they learned, and what their final thoughts are about the Civil Rights.
