Hi and welcome back to my blog post! Throughout this process, I have learned so much that will help me for my future teaching career. Madie and I did our research project off a book called Blubber by Judy Blume. This book teaches students about bullying and has an underlying message that teaches them if they see something, they should say something. This research project has furthered my understanding of making lesson plans for elementary school students. I was able to learn more about how to use specific tools that will help me in the future. Tools that I learned how to use include PowerPoint, incorporating videos and building challenging questions regarding the book we are using. The goal for our project is to teach students about the Judy Blume’s Blubber and attempt to have them find and understand the underlying meaning in the book. The students should be able to find the underlying meaning of the novel using the tools that our lesson incorporates. While building my lesson, I was able to further understand the tools and techniques that we would be using to teach the students.
Throughout the project, there were times that I found the work to be very difficult. My goal was for the students to be engaged in the novel and find its deeper meaning by answering challenging questions that I would design specifically for this. Generating these questions was where I got stuck. I wanted the students to be able to answer the questions by going back to the text. Having the students go back to the text to find the answers to the questions would not only enhance their knowledge about the book but it would also teach them a new strategy on how to answer questions.
Overall, Judy Blume’s Blubber is a great novel on which to create a lesson plan. This novel teaches an important lesson for elementary school students. Judy Blume discusses the issue of bullying in a way younger children are able to understand. Finding a way to teach this lesson was very difficult. We wanted the students to be able to find the deeper meaning in Blubber rather than us telling them. When creating our lesson plan we experienced some issues. We wanted to design it in a way that would benefit the students and teach them something in a challenging and fascinating way. This would allow the students to be more engaged in the lesson. When creating questions we had some troubles. We wanted our questions to be challenging but to a certain extent. When something is too challenging students may give up and in order to keep them engaged in the lesson we needed to find a way to make them interesting and challenging. After brainstorming and doing more research we found a way to design questions that would allow the students to be engaged and challenged. Eventually, we were successful and finished creating our lesson plan.
