The Personal Reflection of the Gatsby Project

Maria and I have worked together and have come up with amazing ideas that we are going to use in our future elementary school classrooms. One of the successes of our project was coming up with the in-class activity of making literature circles which is when the students are assigned into groups and each of them will go through the book, assignments, and activities together. Also, we included some super fun activities for the students so that they can have a better understanding of the novel such as a Gallery Walk, where we would play some 1920s music and display photographs of aspects of daily life, giving the students 30 minutes in the hallway to read out loud and so much more. These activities will make the kids super engaged in the lesson we will teach them, and it will make the students learn things about not only the book but in our country’s history as well. Also, it will even make them do some research on this time period during their free time to learn more about this time period. This information of the Roaring ’20s will also make the students have an easier transition as they progress in their learning of history in America. Our discoveries with these activities made us realize that learning can actually be super fun and easy! In projects, of course, comes challenges. Maria and I had some trouble finding scholarly sources, but we came together, talked out what we found, and even did further research to see if it was related to our topic, informative and so forth. Another challenge we came across was what intelligences can we connect our project to. Maria and I did research on what the intelligences were, and we took each term one by one and tried to connect them to our activities with the students. We wanted to make sure they went along with our project. Even though this was time-consuming, it was well worth it because we not only followed the directions from the rubric, but we made sure that they connected to the student’s way of learning. Interpersonal Intelligence is the ability to understand and interact effectively with others. While doing research on Gatsby, I have a deeper understanding of why this is such an amazing novel. Not only does it portray the beauty of the Roaring 20s, but it shows a darker side of the era such the corruption and immorality lurking beneath the glitz and glamour. The things I learned with the information given and working on the project with Maria made me better appreciate the book, and even the class itself.
