My Third Blog Post

Welcome to my 3rd blog post!

My partner and I are planning on using the book All the Way to America by Dan Yaccarino to teach a second or third grade class. We will portray this lesson through a lesson plan to teach our students about immigration. After reading this book the objective is that students will get the idea that all ancestors were not born in America. It would also be important for them to understand the severity and struggle that comes with immigrating from one country to another. I think that imigration is a great lesson to educate young kids on because it is easy for them once they understand it to relate it to themselves and their lives.

To start off our lesson we will begin by putting a few pictures explaining imigration up on the smart board. We will leave them up for a little while and have the kids write a sentence or two about what they see and can take away from it. The next thing that I would do is read the book to the students. After that I will split the class into groups and get them talking to each other about what they think and took away from the book.  A good way to prepare the students for the lesson could be to ask parents and students to bring in a picture of their family or ancestors that were immigrants so its is easier for the students to also make a connection with the topic of ommigration as well. We will also then take the pictures that we have and match them to the place on the map where their ancestors / family came from. This will give the students a good visual of the distance that they had to travel as well. If students do not have a picture I would have them draw a picture of them with their family so that everyone is included in the activity. To me, this is a very fun and hands on way to teach immigration. I think it is a great way to have children understand it easily cause it could be a very heavy topic as well.

Annotated Bibliography

Yaccarino, D. (2014). All the way to America: The Story of a Big Italian Family and a Little Shovel. New York: Dragonfly Books.

This is an academic and credible source. It is the book that we will be reading for our lesson plan. This is the key to our lesson plan and will, hopefully, teach students the importance and significance of immigration.
