Blog post #3

For my final project, my partner and I have chosen to use the book, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. This book is about a young girl, Vashti, who is discouraged in her art class because she thinks that she cannot draw as well as everyone else in her class. With the help from her teacher who helps her grow her confidence, she is able to create something truly exciting for Vashti. She begins to create many art pieces that is recognized by so many for its uniqueness. By the end of the story, Vashti inspires someone else by the end of the book. I think this story has an inspiring and great lesson behind it. This lesson will be geared towards second or third graders. To teach this book to students for them to fully understand the lesson behind the book, we plan to conduct a lesson with something along the lines of a read aloud, discussion about the book and an activity. For the activity we might have the students draw something that they like or that makes them happy, and have them share it with the class. Hopefully the students can get inspired by other students drawings. This lesson will incorporate the key steps to a successful lesson: Objective, Introduction, Activity and Assessment. I think this lesson and book would target the visual/spatial intelligence from Gardner’s seven intelligences.

This source is a very valuable tool for all teachers, but more specifically elementary educators. This citation provides the key steps with explanations for a successful lesson. It provides the core focus of a lesson which is determining the objective, introduction, activity and assignment.

  • This is the book The Dot, which is the main tool for this lesson plan. This book is about a young girl, Vashti, who feels as though her artwork is not as good as her peers. With the help of her teacher and some self confidence, she is able to create many unique art pieces that was a success.

  • This website describes Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. Specifically, it describes the strengths and characteristics of the visual/spatial intelligence. This is very helpful to this project because we need to relate the book to one of the intelligences.

  • This source goes into deep detail about all the intelligences but gives a great description of the Visual-Spatial Intelligence, which is what we are using for our intelligence. It provides a clear definition of the multiple intelligences with some background of the whole concept along with descriptions of each intelligence.
