Third blog post

Hi welcome back to my third blog post. Our lesson mostly aims toward 3rdand 4thgraders. The main focus of our lesson is on the Civil Rights movement, highlighting Rosa Parks and her impact during that time. We are planning to use the book, The Bus Ride That Changed History. This text was written by Pamela Duncan and she focuses on Rosa Parks’ story. Kelsey and I are planning to create a lesson plan to help us as well as educators teach this topic on the Civil Rights. Through this lesson plan we incorporate Gardner’s visual-spatial and interpersonal intelligences to teach our lesson. I feel as though this topic and lesson plan is an important yet sensitive time in history but students need to learn about it. In the end, I hope the book we chose as well as the lesson plan encourages educators to teach their class about this important time in history.

The beginning of our lesson plan will include a BrainPOP video introducing the idea of the Civil Rights movement. Following the video we plan on projecting a photo journal onto the smart board with images from the Civil Rights movement. We will then ask students to discuss in groups what they see and plan on answering any questions they have. Our main point of display would be a timeline with important dates shown in the photo journal. Next, I will read the book, The Bus Ride That Changed History. After reading the book I will have students fill out an exit slip. This will allow me to formally access what students gained from the lesson.

The only part Kelsey and I have to work on is creating the formal lesson plan for 3rdor 4thgrade educators. This is familiar to both of us do to the fact that we have completed them in previous classes. We also have to put together the photo journal along with making our timeline. Overall, we both feel as though this is a sensitive yet important time in history that young students need to learn about. I hope the book as well as our lesson encourages elementary educators to incorporate the topic of The Civil Rights movement in their yearly teaching standards.
