Hi and welcome back to my third blog post! In my last blog posts I have talked about teaching the Roaring 20s to fifth and sixth graders. The book that my partner and I will be assigning for students to be introduced to the Roaring 20s will be What Were the Roaring Twenties? by Michele Mortlock. This book is great because it has everything that went on during that decade along with real life photos so the students can get a full understanding of life during this time. The way my partner and I will be introducing the whole topic of the Roaring 20s will be a powerpoint, the assigned book, and the final project. Gardner’s intelligence that will help my partner and I gear our teaching tool would be visual spatial intelligence. This intelligence is great for learners that like to look at the pictures and watch videos to direct their learning. Also with this topic, it will be very helpful to show videos and pictures so the children can visually see the difference between the times in history.
The powerpoint will be the first thing my partner and I will show to the class, this will help them get a quick preview what what we will be introducing. The powerpoint will have videos, pictures, facts, important things that were created, and important people. The book will be mentioned and lastly, the final project to complete the lesson. The book will be assigned to read for homework and in class if there is time. Nothing major will be assigned with the reading, the students will write down two questions they have while reading each chapter. The project will be the last thing for the students to complete for this lesson. My partner and I will divide the students in groups of three and each group will be given a time during the Roaring 20s to do research on. Every group will have a different time period, the poster will consist of anything that the group decides to put on it, and they can decorate the poster any way they want. As a final result to the project, the posters will be put in an ordered timeline so the students can see the order of the important history that was made. The poster project is connected to the Gardner intelligence that is visual and spatial intelligence. The visual-spatial intelligence ties together with the timeline walk through because the students can visually see what life was like during this time and how much it has changed. My main goals for this lesson would be the students have a good understanding of life during this time and realize how much time has changed since then.
In conclusion, I would want to teach this text in this way because it gives the students to learn about life during this time and to see the difference. The students can visually see the difference if they are having trouble understanding this topic. While learning this topic and creating their poster projects, the students can have fun during this lesson. At the end of this lesson, I would hope that the students learned a good amount of information about the Roaring 20s and will be excited when they learn more in higher education.
