The Importance of Imagination and Rhyming

While thinking about childhood and reading, one thing that comes to mind is how fascinating colors and pictures are to young children. Not only does it keep them captivated but allows them to use their imagination throughout the story. An author that uses many pictures to engage children is Dr. Seuss. His books fun to read but they have a significant amount of benefits on child development. Dr. Seuss has a very unique writing technique which includes rhymes, made up words and many illustrations. These techniques all add to the enhancement of children’s vocabularies. As a child I had a full collection of his books and could not wait to get into a brand new one to read his jokes and rhymes. Although it was hard to single out one book to focus on for the project, I chose The Cat In The Hat to base my lesson plan around. Some of the words used by Dr. Seuss can be challenging for a younger aged class, however with the help of his illustrations children are able to use their common knowledge to connect the words with the pictures. Creating an activity with this text will be interesting considering all the options I can use, however my goal is to focus on rhyming skills in order to engage the children and encourage participation.
