Second Blog Post

My name is Margaret DeRaffele and welcome to my second teaching blog post. My main execution is guided towards teaching second and third graders about the importance of immigration to and from other countries. My partner and I have chosen a book that can help children have greater understanding of immigration and its exact meaning. This book is called All the Way to America by Dan Yaccarino. As I stated in my last post this story is about one shovel that has been pasted down from generation to generation in a large Italian family. By creating a lesson from this book I think that working in groups and having the children work and create ideas together would be the most effective. As a next step to the lesson, we could pull images up on the board and create visuals in their heads to begin the process of them understanding the concept of immigration. The students will also be able to talk and then share with the class what they think the pictures are expelling. By doing this before we even read the book, it can build their imagination. This will get their minds thinking and help them get excited for the upcoming lesson. After reading All the Way to America, we would have our students talk about what they think we just read about and see if anyone can guess the topic correct in their own words and understandings. We will have them share their answers and thoughts with the class. This will also grow their confidence with talking in the classroom and giving input on the discussions. This can also give students the opportunity to really think and see if this relates to their lives in any way. They can make connections and may also have similarities with other people in the class about their heritage and nationality. It is important in a classroom especially to be careful with certain things that you may have discussions about in the classroom. I picked the immigration topic because I felt like it isn’t too much of a touchy topic and it is something that a lot of families can relate to and be proud of. This lesson I feel will give me great practice on how to go about teaching a real class of young children. This book gives off great importance of America and its past times that involve immigration.
