I have decided to conduct my research on the book, The Dot written by Peter H. Reynolds. This book tells the story of a little girl Vashti who discovers her artistic talent after being constantly frustrated in class. This book said it could be read to any students from 1-5th grade. However I think this would be a great book for a class of second graders. It is not difficult to understand but it does teach them a lesson and could be great for proposing questions to the students throughout the book or when the book is finished. This book shows focus on Gardner’s visual/spatial intelligence. People who have visual-spatial intelligence often visualize the world accurately, modify their surroundings based on their perceptions and are good at remembering things like faces images and fine details. They also often recreate aspects of their visual experiences. In addition, it is also written that people who have visual intelligence often enjoy maps as well. I am thinking that for our teaching tool, Suzie and I might create some sort of lesson plan that will encourage and engage the students to respond creatively. I have to do more research on this to figure out exactly what type of lesson plan we want to do. For starters, I know that we will begin by reading the book to the class and then have a discussion. That is something that I find challenging is figuring out the exact lesson plan to conduct. I took a child education class in high school and creating the lesson plan was always fun but also a little frustrating at first doing all the research and figuring out exactly what to do. I would want it to be fun but also educational, related to the book and engaging the students. This book really speaks on art and creativity so something that involves that would probably be most effective and keep everyone engaged. While doing research for this project I have found the research tools given to be very helpful in finding a good book. In addition, I have actually enjoyed looking through children’s books to find one that I found appealing. It is interesting to see because hopefully someday in a classroom I will need books and resources to access them.
