My name is Margaret DeRaffele and welcome to my first blog post! I’ve been researching different topics that would be appropriate to teach to younger children ages ranging from around 5-10. I realized that immigration would be the most useful and beneficial topic. When I was in elementary school I began to learn about these topics at a some what young age and to me personally I think it is important for young children to know about. As a future teacher, it is an aim of mine to be sure that my students have a clear understanding of these different situations and the different ways some families may live. A good way to make children aware of these things is books! For a lesson plan based on immigration I would defiantly incorporate a good read, along with a powerpoint, videos, pictures and activities. The book that I’ve found is called All the Way to America by Dan Yaccarino. This book is all about the author sharing his family story of how his great-grandfather traveled from Italy to Ellis Island, alone with nothing but a shovel. He left Italy for the better and this shovel that the carried has been passed down to four-generations of the authors family. This read is a good representation of the bonds that immigrant families share. They also create such a bond and look back on the times and be thankful for it. During my lesson I could also add in a time where the students could ask questions and use their imagination on what immigration is like.
