I am interested in looking at realist literature. Realism was a literary and artistic movement that followed Romanticism. Realism is characterized by the choice of the everyday, the use of very typical and authentic settings, believable characters, and very relatable plot lines. Issues of class, money, gender, and geographic location often appear in these works. When reading works from this literary period, readers ca often sympathize with the characters as they are having problems that many people can relate to.

For this assignment, I would focus on the novel Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. I believe that this story would be a good fit for grades 5-6. The story shows the joys of childhood and the wonders of being a child. As these students grow older, they are going to carry more responsibility. Sixth graders are similarly transitioning to middle school and the book prepares the student for the responsibilities that they will soon encounter as they enter middle school. For this lesson, some of the resources I would need include copies of the books, a field trip plan and activity sheets. Since this story is about the many adventures of Tom Sawyer, I would like to include a field trip at the end of the lesson to allow the students to be free to adventure. A field trip to a cave will challenge the students to connect it to the story, when Tom and Becky got lost in the cave. Knowing that students are looking forward to a field trip where they can explore like Tom Sawyer would be an exciting way to finish teaching the book.
