The Modern Period had begun in the 1900s and was a movement in which technology and urbanization increased due to the Industrial Revolution. A favorite text of mine that is included with this time period is The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald. Modernism was portrayed through the corruption of the American dream and disobeying society’s rules. Throughout the book, there are decisions made by each of the characters that cause poor consequences they are left to deal with. I enjoy reading about this time period because it is most relatable and realistic, by showing the struggles individuals had to deal with when new discoveries and ideas were brought up. A very important concept that was included during this time period was realism. While coming up with ideas on how to teach this topic and era to students it is important to keep in mind the main concepts of wealth and corruption. Some ideas and scenes in The Great Gatsby specifically can be inappropriate for the age group I would like to teach. Connecting the scenes from the book to the events occurring in that time period will allow students to engage more with the book as well as analyzing how Fitzgerald represents the American Dream with the characters in the book, how the society affects the individuals and their actions. I would want to teach this time period in specific to children because it is important for them to understand how people’s lives are different in public than when they are home with their spouse. Also it is a very good reminder that money cannot buy happiness and that in most cases it is worse for people socially and mentally.
