Two of the literary time periods I am most interested in are the modern period and the postmodern period. Some of my favorite books were written during these time periods, such as the Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird. I love these specific literary time periods because the history going on in the United States at the time really intrigues me. For example, I love learning about the roaring twenties and this is why I would love to teach about the Great Gatsby and the roaring twenties. The Great Gatsby talks about the Americans Dream and how different people can interpret the American dream differently which is very interesting to me.
I remember when I was younger we learned about the roaring twenties by having an actual roaring twenties party. We were all given roles, someone was the bar-tender at the fake speakeasy that we created in our classroom, some of us were flappers, and some of us were just typical men. It really stuck out to me because it was fun but also really helped me learn about the time period. I would definitely do something like this in my classroom in the future as well. I would teach our class about the Great Gatsby by asking everyone what they believed the “American Dream” really was and have this be a basis for our discussion.
