Dr. Seuss and American History

Upon reflecting and researching for my first blog post about teaching interests, I realized I have quite a few interests that could be beneficial for this project. I found that I do not have an interest in a specific time period. However, I did come to the realization that the older the time period, the more disinterested I become. For example, the Anglo- Saxon time period tends to be a bit more confusing and not as interesting to learn. I do, however, find the Victorian and Romantic period to be interesting. For young children, I love authors such as Dr. Seuss and Eric Carl. I especially like Dr. Seuss because his books give children an outlet for imagination and guides them to think creatively. His colorful artwork shows children the importance of colors and is a perfect example to teach how colors affect your daily life.

For slightly older children, I find that the beginners chapter books that are history based are also good informational books. The idea of using a history book is something I am considering for my project. Along with reading the book, I can also incorporate a history lesson, that way students are able to learn about history while being able to hear stories that make it more fun and interesting. I think it is important to make learning fun in order to keep students involved and engaged with what they are learning. Depending on what book I ultimately decide on, my goal in to involve fun projects within it to keep the book interesting. When I become a teacher, it Is my hope that I will be able to have access to other people’s ideas on how they made reading and learning more fun.
