Teaching on Immigration

My name is Angela Hill and welcome to my teaching blog! After brainstorming and researching different topics I could use for my final project, I have decided that I really like the topic of immigration experiences. This is a very relevant topic for all age groups, and I feel like the earlier students start learning about it, the better they will understand the topic and how important it is to America and its history. As I am still unsure which author I would like to focus on, I researched many books about immigration that are relevant to elementary school students. For instance, Dreaming of America, by Eve Bunting, is a story about a fifteen year old girl who was the first Ellis Island immigrant. These books will help students between second and fourth grade to understand what immigration is all about. As for the multiple intelligences, I feel as if many students are visual learners and interacting with others helps them learn. Therefore, I would like to focus on the spatial and interpersonal intelligences. For the spatial intelligence, I can use pictures and have the students caption them, or have a background video to play before the book is read. After reading, we can do a group activity for the interpersonal intelligence to discuss and write what we learned from the book. This topic entails that I generate interest in Realism and a some books from the Modernist period, as well. The Realism period began around 1870, but people did not begin to enter the U.S. through Ellis Island until 1892. I am very excited to one day teach my students about this topic, as I believe it is one of the most important pieces of American history they will learn. I will try my best to keep them engaged and answer their questions about this topic when the time comes, but it is my top priority for them to understand the material we are discussing.
