What would I teach?

Hello, my name is Maria Bonaddio and welcome to my teaching blog! If I were to teach 5th graders, I would like to teach them about the history of Massachusetts. I would like to teach them about the settlers, what life was like for them, what crops they grew, and who the Puritans were. I would especially like to teach about the early settlers because not only is it interesting and great for social studies, but for reading and writing as well! One book I would love to teach would be The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Although the book was written in the postmodern literary period, the story takes place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692–93. I believe this book is very perceptive about what life in Massachusetts was like during this time. It also gives children more insight into the lives of the Puritans and what they were like.

I imagine teaching about the Massachusetts Bay Colony in a way that gets students involved and really hands-on. One idea I have is to have students come up with their own state and have them create their own rules/laws. They could then present on their new state to the class, which will not only help with verbal skills but also with speaking in front of an audience. After learning much about Massachusetts, I would then introduce The Crucible and assign each child a character. Having the kids read aloud is another great way of having them develop their verbal and public speaking skills. I also believe that acting it out and possibly even using props could be really fun! During the time the class reads The Crucible, I would assign homework each night, having students answer questions about what they learned and what they think will happen next. Doing this will get kids thinking, as well as making sure they are following along and understand what is happening. Lastly, I would have them create their own witches since the story is about Puritans banning witchcraft. I think crafting is just be a fun hands-on activity for kids, especially if I teach them Miller’s novel during the month of October for Halloween! Overall, these are some ideas I have if I were to teach 5th graders about the early life of the Massachusetts Bay Colony! Hope you fellow future educators enjoyed and use some of these ideas!
